My Top 2 Games of 2021

2021

This is not really much of a blog post, but I had to post something to get things started. I only played two new games in 2021, and one of them isn’t even fully released yet. 2021 was a garbage year meant for garbage thoughts and garbage feelings. It got somewhat optimistic at the tailend of it, but then had to cap it off with things going back to the “new normal.” Of course, it had to be during the Holidays when Omicron would strike. This goes on and on in this mandatory yet late year-end blog post. (more…)

My Top 5 Games of 2020 (and 2019)

Top 5 Games of 2020 (and 2019)

For all the time there was available in the Year of Our Lord 2020, I didn’t play that many games. Not only have games become more and more expensive, but more and more of them are harder to run on this five-year-old computer. But I can say that every game I did get to play that year was a meaningful experience. They were the silver lining on the dark cloud that was 2020, a year that shall long live in infamy. (more…)

My Top 10 Games of the 2010s

Top Ten of 2010s

It’s that time of the year, but I haven’t played enough games this year to put up a list of my top ten games for 2019. I’ve been busy with work, commentating for Manila Wrestling Federation, and dealing with life. It hasn’t been the best year for me, but it was also a reflective year. This post continues that theme, letting me look back at the games I enjoyed throughout the outgoing decade that was the 2010s. (more…)

My Top 10 Games of 2016

2016 in Avoiderdragon

It seems like coming late with these annual top 10 games lists is now a tradition. Publishing a month late does give me more time and room to meditate on which games really moved me in the previous year, thus coming up with a better video and post to explain my feelings about my picks. With that said, I didn’t play as many games as I could have last year, which explains why I left so many good titles out. Despite that, I feel pretty good about this list of the ten best games of 2016 I got to play. (more…)

7 Games I Like Due to Aesthetics

7 Games I Like Due to Aesthetics

The adage “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is said as an advice for those who tend to judge quality by appearance because humans tend to do the opposite. Most human beings do judge things by aesthetics, so they’re not to be seen as mere decoration but a substantial part of our world view. This applies to video games as well, although judging their appearances is not from a cover art or such, but how the actual game looks. (more…)

7 Great Documentaries About Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali in When We Were Kings

It has been over a month since his passing and I felt the need to share some of the material that helped me know more about Muhammad Ali as a person. Being someone who was born when he was already well past his boxing days, the only thing I could really do was watch his matches, interviews, and documentaries about his life during my formative years in the 2000s. I was able to do so with the power of the Internet, and it helped me appreciate and learn from such a remarkable man, both in and out of the ring. (more…)

Top 10 Games of 2015 [Video]

Avoiderdragon's Top 10 Games of 2015

I’m almost three weeks late for this, but at least I got it out before February rolled around. While late for that annual hot period for top 10 lists for X year, I think it’s still ripe for yet another list because I do think I’m hot shit like that. It’s not a very “complete” list though since I only include games I got to play in 2015, so it’s bound to get sticklers flustered by the absence of certain titles that do merit recognition, but those games already got enough attention as is. (more…)

Best Matches of EVO 2015

Evolution Championship Series

It’s that time of the year once again, and this one looks to be quite different from previous iterations. EVO 2015 seems to be the changing of the guard, with prominent players getting eliminated to make way for newer generations of players (except in Smash Melee). If you’re one of those who didn’t get to watch it live or just want to watch the great matches again, then this list might help you with your viewing pleasure. Even if it’s over now, these high-level matches will live on in memory and on the Internet for all to watch. (more…)

8 Videos and Films on Financial Disasters

Financial Disasters

Amid financial ruin, Greece just had their bailout referendum on whether they will agree to the conditions set by the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Central Bank (they voted no). Elsewhere, stock markets in China have experienced their biggest plunge since 1992. The last great economic recession we’ve had was back in 2008 with the American housing crash, and we may be in the verge of another one. If you don’t know what any of this means, then perhaps it’s time to learn a bit about financial disasters and how they happen. (more…)

5 Boxing Matches Better than Mayweather vs Pacquiao

Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier

This is the first proper post in this website on combat sports (the only sports I’ll ever write about here), which is something I have immense passion for. In this occasion, let’s talk about something that temporarily made the Philippines the top producer of salt in the world. It has been a month since the so-called “Fight of the Century”—Mayweather vs. Pacquiao—an over-hyped pay-per-view that should have happened 5 years before that has already proven to be forgettable. The reason why it happened is because it just had to happen and for the money. But that doesn’t mean boxing is a dead sport; not by a long shot. (To hell with those who do think so.) (more…)

Top 5 Reasons Why I Did Not Play MOBAs

Recently, I was able to acquire access to both Dawngate and Heroes of the Storm, new MOBAs that are designed to be more “casual-friendly” than their more competitive counterparts. Not sure if that really is the case, but it seems that I’m getting more reasons to really get into the genre now, as indirectly declared by the past tense used in the title. But first, I need to do something cathartic in order to prepare myself. (more…)
