Relive StarCraft Brood War for Free with Mass Recall

StarCraft: Mass Recall

While I’m writing a script for what will hopefully be a full StarCraft II review video (I really have to start making more videos), I look back at the story of the first StarCraft and its expansion Brood War. Even after 17 years, those six campaigns still stand on their own. For those who still want to experience the awesomeness of the first StarCraft, but also want it in the graphics of StarCraft II, then this mod is exactly that.

StarCraft: Mass Recall is a remake of the StarCraft and Brood War campaigns in StarCraft II had been in the works for quite some time, and it just got a month or two ago. If you haven’t played the original campaigns yet, either because you were too young or too noob, then now’s the time.

Get it from SC2mapster (or look for it in Blizzard Arcade, if that’ll actually work). The installation does take a bit of time and doing due to its size and nature, but it’s definitely worth the effort.

You can play it entirely for free with StarCraft II Starter Edition—all you need is a Battle.net account and a copy of the StarCraft II client.

StarCraft and Brood War Abbreviated

If you really don’t feel like playing or just want to rewatch it without having to play, then you’re in luck. StarCraft II personality JaKaTaK just saved you the trouble by recording all the the briefings, cinematics, and in-game dialogue into two well-edited videos for your viewing pleasure.

It’s alright if you really don’t want to play the campaigns, but you’re certainly missing out.

How Bad is StarCraft II’s Story?

Mind you, it isn’t really that bad, but it really pales in comparison to its predecessor’s. It was certainly better, but perhaps changes to Blizzard Entertainment’s design doctrine (mostly brought on by World of Warcraft) may be to blame for the seemingly lazy and predictable writing of the StarCraft II campaigns. But then again, Blizzard wasn’t part of a public company back then, so perhaps something just had to give.

Quite a few people have given their opinions about the StarCraft II story, and I wish to compile them and add my own two cents in what will hopefully be my own StarCraft II review.
