Mea Culpa on Having Called Mafia a “GTA Clone”

Mea Culpa on Calling Mafia a "GTA Clone"

After much deliberation, I’ve decided to make a full post to take responsibility for something I’ve gotten flak for. At the start of my retrospective video on Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, I committed the gaffe of calling the game a “GTA clone”. Some may be puzzled at what may be wrong with that, and I’m still a bit on the fence on how wrong it really was to have done so. At first, I thought it’s like referring to caviar as “salty fish eggs”, which may upset connoisseurs, but is certainly true. But in this case, as I’ve found out, that would actually be a flat-out lie. (more…)

AVDR 2018 Blogging and Video Plans

AVDR 2017

Alright, so it’s that time again to make promises and see if they can be kept. I should keep these as realistic and grounded as possible, but that also may have me running the risk of putting my goals too low, which can be just as detrimental as not fulfilling them at all. Since things seem to be going quite well for me right now at the beginning of 2018, I should aim just a bit higher than what’s advisable in order to get this blog and everything else to another level by the end of this auspicious year. (more…)

MWF Balikbayan — Wrestling Comedy of Errors

MWF Balikbayan

There are no excuses for how late this turned out other than sitting on my hands the whole time while typing this with a pencil between my teeth. Same thing goes for MWF Balikbayan, a show that faced a laundry list of difficulties coming in, and it proved to be quite the learning experience. Not everything is good, not everything is bad, and not everything is deliberate. I’d say the title I’ve given this is quite appropriate in hindsight. It was still a pretty good show, yielding a truly incredible match, two new prospects, and some entertaining moments. (more…)

Switch to Medium or Stick with Web Hosting?

Switch to Medium or Stick with Web Hosting?

Running this site, amid all the delays and procrastination in making content, is something that keeps me from giving up on life itself. The extent with which I’ve made it manifest is such that I have to somehow post something at least once or twice per month since I actually pay money every month to keep it up. However, this time around, I’m at a crossroads as I may have to give up on that due to money being tight and having less time to deal with the web development. Should I switch to Medium? (more…)

Gong Shou Dao — Jack Ma Slinging Dick

Gong Shou Dao

Over three weeks after Jack Ma visited the Philippines to give a talk in De La Salle University—disparaging Filipino Internet along the way—here’s a bigger surprise from him. He has always been generous with advice to young entrepreneurs who may be going through the same things he experienced as a young man trying to come up with what would later become Alibaba. But in this particular case, he brings out his inner Richie Rich and stars in a martial arts movie, with him battling well-known martial arts actors and athletes—because Jack Ma. (more…)

Current State of Blogging and Why I’m Slow

WTF, blogging?

This is not just a status update on the site, but also an editorial on what I think about blogging and what I think is best practice (which is far from the “best”). Basically, I’m going to rant and whine about something I’m finding hard to get noticed at. More than just a rant, the main purpose of this post is for me to wrap my head around the things that are making this whole content creation thing hard for me. Also, I hope to get feedback from those who may care even a bit about what I do, if there are any. (more…)

WWE SummerSlam 2017 — Too Long, Not Bad, Kinda Weird

WWE SummerSlam 2017

For the first post on this blog related to the WWE, I should start off with one I got to watch in a live viewing event. I went with a friend to Skinny Mike’s Sports Bar in Bonifacio Global City, which made the experience a lot more fun. Not only did I get to eat some pretty good baked sisig, but I also watched it with fellow Manila Wrestling Federation guys. The PPV was not bad at all either, which is pleasantly surprising as I expected some really shitty booking. (more…)

PWR Renaissance 2017 — My First PWR Show

PWR Renaissance 2017

The first time I caught wind of Philippine Wrestling Revolution, it was Kanto Terror and Bombay Suarez’s flaming chop. I thought it had tremendous potential to revive the Pinoy wrestling scene, and it indeed did. Fast forward to now, I’m somewhat a part of that scene through my role as the ring announcer of Manila Wrestling Federation. Throughout that whole time, I had never attended a PWR show due to local wrestling having been merely a passing interest for me until this year. (more…)

AVDRcast Episode 1: Difficulties in Content Creation

AVDRcast

If this looks familiar to the tiny handful who actually follow whatever I waste my time doing, this is a revamp of the AVDRcast. I thought giving this another shot is worth the effort since I have a good mic, time in my hands, and things to say about whatever. The format of what I now consider the alpha version of this podcast was utter trash; I need to go with something more long term instead of just talking about current events. For instance, this episode is about why I’m still struggling with this whole content creation schtick, even when I’ve been failing to gain traction all these years. (more…)

Headbutt Blues: Katsuyori Shibata’s (Likely) Swan Song

Katsuyori Shibata after headbutting Kazuchika Okada in NJPW Sakura Genesis 2017

Due to his recent self-inflicted injury during his excellent match against IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada, Katsuyori Shibata was hospitalized by a subdural hematoma. The image of blood streaming down his forehead after headbutting Okada will always pop up whenever his name is mentioned from now on. While it’s indeed a testament to how serious he is as a performer, Katsuyori Shibata’s career now hangs in the balance as of this writing. (more…)

MWF x MCS — The First Sign of Madness

Manila Wrestling Federation Live at Makati Cinema Square Arena

After a week of mulling over it (or more like being lazy), I finally mustered the drive to write about this event. For their very first proper show, outside of showcases like that in History Con and so on, Manila Wrestling Federation hasn’t done too badly at all. There are certainly growing pains, but the talent and passion are indeed there as MWF has finally officially thrown their hat into the local pro wrestling scene here in the Philippines. (more…)

My High-Energy Zarya Problems in Overwatch

Overwatch — Zarya

Recently, I’ve been rethinking about my approach to Overwatch. Since late last year, I’ve been a Zarya main as I found her to be my most dependable option. She lets me consistently(?) contribute to my team, whether I’m doing particularly well or not. Constant use of barriers, consistent splash damage, picking off stragglers every now and then, staying alive, and well-placed graviton surges are pretty much the basics to a competent Zarya. (more…)
